History of Lake View and Upper Lake

The history of Lake View is closely connected with the Upper Lake, which is traditionally associated with Raja Bhoj of the Paramara dynasty.

According to local legend, Raja Bhoj suffered from a skin disease that could not be cured by ordinary treatments. A saint advised him to construct a large water reservoir by bringing together water from 365 streams and tributaries. After the reservoir was created, the king is said to have recovered.

The Upper Lake is traditionally dated to the 11th century. In 2011, it was officially renamed Bhojtal in honour of Raja Bhoj.

The modern Lake View area developed as a public waterfront where visitors can enjoy the lake, gardens, roads, and recreational activities. It has become one of the most recognizable scenic locations in Bhopal.
